Social Media Guidelines & Policy

Social Media Guidelines for Downtown Chambersburg Businesses

Issued by Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization

Applies to: Downtown Chambersburg Facebook & Instagram Pages

Purpose

These guidelines are designed to help Downtown Chambersburg businesses understand how to effectively engage with DCI’s social media platforms while managing expectations around content sharing, original posts, and live features. These services are provided free of charge by DCI as part of our ongoing commitment to downtown revitalization.

Area of downtown:

Businesses, organizations, projects and events within the blue circle, 2500’ linear feet from the Fountain, will be allowed to be featured on DCI’s social media platforms.

What DCI Can Offer

  1. Content Sharing (Shares of Business Posts)
  • DCI regularly shares business-generated content on Facebook and Instagram stories or feeds when appropriate.
  • We prioritize posts that are:
    • Timely and relevant to downtown activity
    • High-quality images and clear messaging
    • Aligned with community events, promotions, or public interest
  • Due to the large number of businesses, we cannot guarantee that every post will be shared or shared equally.

  1. Original Posts (Created by DCI)
  • DCI may produce original content for key events, campaigns, or business spotlights.
  • These are limited to major initiatives due to time and staffing constraints.
  • Businesses can submit requests, but we strongly encourage businesses to generate their own content and tag DCI for potential resharing.

  1. Live Videos or Event Coverage
  • DCI may host or promote live videos for major downtown events or seasonal campaigns.
  • We do not have capacity to provide live video coverage for individual business promotions.
  • Businesses are encouraged to conduct their own live videos and tag DCI for increased visibility.

Capacity & Time Limitations

  • As a small nonprofit team, DCI must balance multiple responsibilities with limited staff time.
  • We cannot manage social media for individual businesses.
  • We are not able to accommodate last-minute post requests or guaranteed coverage for every event or sale.

How to Work Best with DCI Social Media

DO:

  • Tag @DowntownChambersburg on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Send high-quality content at least 5–7 days in advance.
  • Use consistent branding and clear event details in your posts.
  • Engage with DCI content (likes, shares, comments) to help boost overall visibility.

DON’T:

  • Expect guaranteed promotion of every post or event.
  • Send excessive or repetitive content expecting daily shares.
  • Assume we can create custom graphics, write-ups, or manage your social calendar.

Balancing Quality and Equity

  • DCI aims to promote a diverse mix of businesses and voices.
  • Quality over quantity: We focus on content that provides value, is visually engaging, and strengthens the downtown brand.
  • Excessive tagging or outreach will not increase your chances of being featured, but thoughtful, timely, and well-branded content might.

A Partnership, Not a Service

Please remember:

  • Social media support is a free community service provided by DCI.
  • It’s intended to complement—not replace—your own marketing.
  • These guidelines are meant to ensure a respectful, productive relationship between businesses and DCI’s team.
